Win at World Team Cup

At the BNP Paribas World Team Cup TeamNL demonstrated that it is at the top of wheelchair tennis. In Portugal the women’s team and the quads team won the world title. The Dutch women became the best in the world for the 22nd time. The Dutch men finished second and the boys reached the semifinals.

On Wednesday Max Verstappen and Irene Schouten were voted Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year at the NOC*NSF Sports Gala in Amsterdam. Diede de Groot became Paralympic Athlete of the Year at the expense of Jetze Plat (cycling and triathlon) and Sanne Voets (horse dressage). Diede de Groot has completed the ‘calendar slam’, winning the title at all grand slam tournaments in one calendar year. The number one in the world was too strong for the Japanese Yui Kamiji in the final of the US Open: 3-6 6-1 6-1.  Earlier this year, De Groot already won the Australian Open, Roland Garros and Wimbledon. Diede achieves her 14th grandslamtitel

This Saturday Wheelchair tennisplayer Diede de Groot achieved het fourteenth singles grandslamtitel. The 25 year old dutch defeated the Japanese Yui Kamiji in the Roland Garros singles final in two straight sets: 6-4 6-1.

Last year the number 1 and 2 in the ranking also battled it out in the final in Paris. Also then De Groot won the match: 6-4 6-3.

De Groot hasn’t lost a match since februari 2021. Her victory in de final at Roland Garros means het 50th win in a row. Last year De Groot won all grandslam tournaments and the paralympic title, which completed the so called golden grand slam. De Groot was the first female tennis player to accomplish the golden slam since Steffi Graf in 1988.

Esther Vergeer remains the most succesfull wheelchair tennisplayer of all time with 21 singles grandslam titels.
